Voodoo R&B can loosely be defined as music originating from the New Orleans area of Louisiana that has been influenced, to a greater or lesser degree, by the voodoo religion. Although nineteenth-century American slave masters repeatedly tried, often through brutal means, to suppress the beliefs slaves brought with them from their native West Africa, they were never entirely successful.
