Naretha Williams is a First Nations experimental audio artist, sound engineer and composer. She is a Wiradjuri woman of mixed lineage, born and based in Melbourne on the Sovereign Land of the Kulin Nation.
Naretha's latest work, Blak Mass, is a continuation of her CRYPTEX project which explores themes of identity, place and body. The contemporary electronic music was composed partly using the code from her own DNA (she uses it to create mathematical templates to inform the score). The work was commissioned by the City of Melbourne specifically to be performed on the Grand Organ of Melbourne Town Hall, a venue which creates a powerful juxtaposition between tradition, colonialism and modern First Nations identity and arts.
