Review from 'Rave Magazine':
With track titles such as Womb Envy and Winter Is My Favourite Airport, self-confessed strange man Ivan Hicks amps the oddball factor up in his debut album, Brighter Futures Dialysis. Stripped of instruments save a $40 nylon-stringed guitar and vocals awash with euphoric melancholia, the lyrics make most of the home-recorded tracks resemble a brainstorming exercise. For example, there's Cat Power's Armpits, a cataclysmic narrative tasting of LSD and Lou Reed, in which Hick rants 'Burning flags and vomit bags / While the skin headband / Erupts from your bile gland / And some other things / You forgot to bring / With a circle of bruises on your chin.' As the album progresses to Venus In Flames and Horseskull Nebula, however, melodies eventually pick up; the latter with its 90s strum and grunge edge (jazz chords, anyone?), the first with its themes of isolation and sordid sweetness. "Where are you going friend of mine? / Where are you going, Queen of light?' Amateur Childbirth painstakingly repeats in Malcom's Rainbow as his guitar slows down, briefly allowing us to wallow along. The debut is a triumph for Hicks and all his anatomical delusions, but it can be a little rough on an empty stomach.
