Singing & Songing is the debut album from rising ambient-pop act Hubcaps, the project of Gadigal land/Sydney multi-instrumentalist and producer Ella Mosley. Self-produced, written and recorded by Mosley, Singing & Songing is a compelling vision of bedroom pop. Rickety drums, sparkling synths and clean, electric guitar mingle with Hubcaps' quietly loud melodies, pure and unguarded at once. The porous production immerses listeners into a space that feels both casual and uncomfortably close, Mosley's vocals, soaked in reverb and looped to infinity, serving as an anchor across the record. Beneath the ambient production of the album is a personal document on connection, control and comfort. Mosley wrote quiet album opener 'Loop' as a way to feel connected and grounded in her body and surroundings; focusing and paying close attention to items in her house, sounds on the street and the feeling of her sheets against her skin; serving as a reminder that she is in, and can return to, the present. With distorted organs, a simple drum beat and muddled vocals, 'Concrete Chest' was Mosley's first attempt at producing, 'creating beats and loops in Garageband opening up a new door to the ways I could create music, and realising my songs didn't have to stop at guitar and vocals.' 'Marble' sees Mosley dwell on feelings of inadequacy, control and letting one's guard down, her airy, layered vocals floating over drum hits and sparkling synths like a kite catching a breeze, while 'Inkling', the first Hubcaps track written at the age of nineteen in 2020 following a trip overseas, is grittier and heavier on electric guitar; vocals re-recorded last year as Mosley's vocals and production skills had developed. Album single 'Beside(s) Me', sees Mosley's reverb-heavy vocals glide over crystalline synths and rippling 808 drums like a bird in flight, while title track 'Singing & Songing' sees Mosley's sylph-like vocals layered over a thumping beat and distorted bass, with lighter, poppier components weaving in and out of the mix, lending an overarching sense of calm to the bewitching and blusterous track. Mosley cites 'Rambling', a reflection on longing and memory, as the 'biggest song on the album', sharing 'it served as a lesson in sticking to a vision and leaving a track' , leaving plenty of space to drop in and out of vocals, opposed to adding layers upon layers. Closing track, 'Conversations', came together in one setting, a melodic bed of vocals hovering over the track like a self-described 'fever dream'. Mosley created Singing & Songing in her bedroom using GarageBand over three years, each note typed out by hand on her laptop, with the exception of an electric guitar, which she plays across the album's nine tracks. She describes her process as 'immersive and allconsuming' - writing, producing and recording simultaneously, layering instrumentals, looping vocals and tweaking tiny details, 'not realising four or five hours have passed'. Hubcaps launched in 2023 with the release of debut single and album title track 'Singing & Songing', which came alongside the announcement of her signing to Naarm/Melbourne label Dinosaur City Records, joining a cast of acclaimed Australian artists including Simona Castricum, REBEL YELL, bodies of divine infinite and eternal spirit, e4444e, Punko and Solo Career. Album singles 'Singing & Songing' and follow-up 'Beside(s) Me' were met with acclaim from VICE, Guardian Australia, Pilerats and Music Feeds among others, with rotation adds at FBi Radio and 2SER, spins across 4ZZZ, 3RRR, PBS, Edge and RTR and adds to Spotify's taste-making editorial playlists Fresh Finds and Fresh Finds Indie.
